goose gossage and the hall of fame

So, Richard Michael "Goose" Gossage has been cricital of the Baseball Writers Association of America, who have not yet elected him to the Hall of Fame. That he voiced his anger is unfortunate, but in my opinion, Hall of Fame entry should never be based on popularity or likeability. It should be based on exceptional performance in the game that is compliant with its rules. Goose's 310 saves and 1502 strikeouts during his 21-season career are stats worthy of election.

Thankfully, according to Wikipedia, "[i]n 70 years of voting by the Baseball Writers Association of America, no one with such a high vote proportion (64.6% in 2005) has ever failed to gain eventual election."

I'd vote for you, Goose.

centerfield

Johnny Damon was signed by the New York Yankees on December 20, 2005, and will become their starting centerfielder in 2006.

I've been following the Yankees since 1990. I am not only familiar with, but also a massive fan of, Bernie Williams. He is not the kind of power player often associated with the centerfield position. However, it's plainly obvious that his perceived weaknesses are not due to a lack of effort. He's doing everything he can. As he has been a Yankee for his entire career to this point, I'm not content to let him leave.

Bernie performed well in 2005 when he started as a designated hitter. He can still start in centerfield, but limiting his starts there will ensure the best results.

Johnny Damon is an experienced power player with a good attitude. He comes from the despised Boston Red Sox, a team with which he won the World Series in 2004. Once Damon delivers for the Yankees, I'm certain the fans will accept him.

It's fine for the Yankees to sign Johnny Damon, as long as Bernie Williams plays for another year.
